The age obtained through dating is an apparent age. In case of mixing or large recharge area, the apparent age could differ from the real age of water. Nevertheless the use of 4 different tracers (3 CFC and the SF6) allows identifying the type of mixture and in certain cases quantifing them.
Percentage of young water in hydrogeological system
CFC and SF6 are specific tracers for recent groundwater (0-50 years). In case of mixture between old and young groundwater, it is possible to determine the proportion of each reservoir in the water flux.
Tracers of recent water intrusion
These tracers allow identifying intrusion of recent or surface water into old groundwater (often captive).
Other elements could be used to define mixing proportion for groundwater mixture or groundwater/ surface water relation. LADES also uses these tracers like isotopes or trace elements which could help if water mass does not have contrasted ages.
